Chinese Zodiac Compatibility: the Animals

Is your potential mate a snake? Are dogs really man’s best friends? These questions take on a different meaning in the context of Chinese Zodiac compatibility.

The first step in determining Chinese horoscope compatibility is understanding the animal signs. Each of the 12 Chinese Zodiac signs is represented by a particular animal. Each of these signs is intended to incorporate its animal’s characteristics, as seen in traditional Chinese culture. Because of cultural differences, non-Chinese people often see some of these signs as insults to the character. The rat, for instance, is thought of in the West as a dirty pest, and the pig as filthy and lazy. In Chinese culture though, both animals are highly respected: the rat for its resourcefulness and the pig for its high intelligence. Chinese astrology compatibility must be seen within its cultural context.

The following are the 12 Chinese Zodiac signs in their specific order, to determine your Chinese Zodiac compatibility. According to Chinese lore, the specific order of the zodiac was determined through a race, in which the rat cheated by standing on the ox’s head and jumping ahead of him when they reached the finish line. The race finished as follows:

  1. Rat
  2. Ox
  3. Tiger
  4. Rabbit
  5. Dragon
  6. Snake
  7. Horse
  8. Sheep
  9. Monkey
  10. Rooster
  11. Dog
  12. Pig

Another legend concerns the absence of the cat from the Chinese Zodiac: it is said the rat was given the task of inviting the animals to report to the Jade Emperor for a banquet to be selected for the zodiac signs. The cat was a good friend of the rat, but the rat tricked him into believing that the banquet was the next day. The cat slept through the banquet, thinking that it was the next day. When he found out, the cat vowed to be the rat’s natural enemy for ages to come. However, the cat did make it into the Vietnamese Zodiac, in place of the rabbit.
